Deep-water osmium-isotope record of the Permian–Triassic interval from Niushan, China reveals potential delayed volcanic signal post the mass extinction

The end Permian mass extinction event is one of the most severe biotic crisis Phanerozoic. trigger this has been widely linked to massive volcanic activity associated with Siberian Traps Large Igneous Province through application multiple geochronological (e.g., UPb and ArAr dating) geochemical proxies C, Hg, Zn, Os, etc.). Of these proxies, a few osmium (187Os/188Os) records are available for near-shore/shallow water depositional settings Meishan, China; Opal Creek, Canada), which suggest episodes volcanism before, during after event. Here, we present new initial 187Os/188Os (Osi) stratigraphy across deep-water Niushan Permian–Triassic boundary interval section South China that reveals single unradiogenic Os-isotope shift (from ~0.6 0.3) interval, interpreted be related activity. Above excursion, radiogenic ~1.1 detected at correlative Osi observed in Meishan section. This increase values taken reflect enhanced continental weathering. Both excursions smaller magnitude compared Os isotope profiles from more shallow-water sections Creek. Our data investigations variety environments may yield comprehensive understanding scale global perturbations weathering intensity interval.
